I need an unbelievably powerful laptop for CAD drawings. I’ve been looking at Alienware Area 51…?
I know this is a gaming laptop, but would it be powerful enough for my purposes? To give you an idea, the file that I’m working on at the moment is over 300MB and getting bigger. A desktop PC is no use to me – I travel a lot and the bulk of my design work is abroad – I need a laptop that I can take with me, one that is capable of dealing with full-on photo level rendering, multiple layers and detail. Advice would be appreciated!
I’m using a Toshiba Satellite A100 at the moment and as I’ve mostly been handling minor projects, it’s been up to the job. However, my project load and scale has increased, and this can no longer cope with it. Plus it’s driving me nuts and is going to end up chucked out of the window as it’s so damned slow…
Might also be worth looking at something like the Dell Precision series or some of the HP mobile workstations both of which have graphics chips optimised for things like CAD work at the expense of gaming performance.
Of course some information on what you are using now might help.
EDIT: The A100 IIRC has Intel integrated graphics which is utterly crap so if that has been handling minor things alright there’s a good chance that pretty much any mobile workstation should be able to do the job.
