The area of Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, and Wales presents a highly interesting facet of the UK. By itself, Swansea boasts of being a large population center within the country. It can proudly claim over 170, 000 citizens, which ranks it only beneath the national capital of Cardiff. Neath Port Talbot is a borough, and is also a ‘principal region’ in the country.
Lying on the southwest coastline of Wales, Swansea experienced its most robust growth period during the 1800s. Owing to the depth of its relationship with copper mining activities, it was once called ‘Copperopolis’ by many people. A fascinating Welsh past lies all around the area, and there is evidence of human habitation going back to the Stone Age. Additionally, the Romans and Vikings had a presence at various times.
The advent of the Industrial Revolution helped to contribute to the improvement of Swansea’s standing, when its support of copper smelting – beginning around 1720 – commenced. In combination with coal mining in the area, Swansea took advantage of its port to help it nurture and grow, which it had done in a significant way by 1881.
Sadly, by the 1900s, much of the region encompassing Swansea and the wider Welsh nation suffered a decline in most industries in the country. The town underwent a concerted bombing effort by the Germans in World War II, and the present-day town is mostly a rebuilt product that began to grow after the cessation of hostilities in 1945.
Port Talbot, including Neath – giving it the name Neath Port Talbot – lies to the eastern border of Swansea. It is also the 8th-largest county in all the country, counting nearly 140, 000 people within its ranks. At one point (around the 1930s or so), it had more than 150, 000 people but has been in a gradual decline of population since then. Fortunately, this loss has stabilized somewhat, and hopes are high for the future.
