How much do people in the UK know about the US?
This is going to sound like a bit of a weird question but how familiar are people in the UK with US culture and history? I feel like I know quite a bit about English culture and history but that probably is because I read and take an active interest in anything relating to England, not so much Ireland, Scotland, or Wales though. For example, would the average British man/women know about JFK’s assassin Lee Harvey Oswald? Would they know about the whole Roswell, NM alien conspiracy theory? Would they know that James Madison is considered to be the father of the US Constitution?
A lot, we steal a good bit of popular culture from you. Most schoolkids have to read books by Mark Twain, Tenessee Williams and Harper Lee, the National geographic can be found on the table in most dentist suregeries (and in fact my doormat). Many Brits holiday in Florida and California, we know a lot more about you than you do us in other words. National TV screens popular American shows and many British actors and singers are based in Hollywood.
