Newer digital cameras may allow for faster exposures, larger printouts by taking photos with more megapixels, and increased photographic opportunities with enhanced zoom capabilities. While new digital cameras seem to be released every month, with today’s worrisome economy it may not be possible to take advantage of these technological advancements.

Though it may be frustrating when you cannot purchase newer digital cameras, think about this: have you really taken advantage of what you own? There are ways to take better photos with your older digital camera that require minimal or no cost. In fact, here are seven of them.

1. Photo Quality is Not All about Electronics

While advanced electronics are great and can help amateur photographers take better photos, there are some principles in photography that remain the same no matter what digital camera you use.

Experiment with composition – look around your environment for different angles, natural frames, and details you may have previously missed. Try adjusting your lighting by shooting outdoor photos at different times, especially around dusk and dawn. When possible, move existing lighting around indoors to allow for clearer, brighter shots.

2. Clean Your Camera

Dirt and smudges can ruin your photographs, no matter if the camera is a less than $100 compact or a multi-thousand dollar digital SLR. Safely clean your lens with a camera blower brush, lens cleaner, and/or other appropriate cleaning equipment. Wipe your LCD screen and/or viewfinder to make it easier to see when composing photographs. If you are using a dSLR, consider taking your digital camera to a local digital camera store to get a professional sensor cleaning. This can help remove dirt and smudges that may appear in photos, especially when taken with f-stops such as f/16 or f/22.

3. Steady Your Camera

If you just cannot get usable shots in low-light situations without noise or blurriness, attach your digital camera to a monopod, tripod, or other steadying device when allowed. This should allow you to take longer photos at lower ISOs, allowing for clearer images with less noise.

You don’t have to shell out hundreds of dollars for a top-of-the-line model, just make sure the one you buy is sturdy. However, in some situations, you may be able to steady your digital camera just by placing it on a beanbag on a sturdy surface!

4. Really Cheap Photo Manipulation Software

Can’t afford Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, or Corel Photo-Paint or Paint Shop Pro to tweak your images? There are a few completely free alternatives that perform much of the same functionality, allowing you to adjust tone curves, sharpen images, perform strategic replacements of subjects, and more. These include GIMP (available for multiple platforms) and Paint.Net (for Windows).

5. Fake Your Megapixels in Printouts

Do you just need a couple more megapixels of detail in your photos to create larger printouts? You may wish to consider software packages such as Alien Skin Blow Up or onOne Software’s Genuine Fractals. These programs claim to support more-realistic image resizing than what you may find in the above software or even more expensive applications. Note that your experiences with these applications may vary.

6. Lens Adapters

Some digital cameras support lens adapters, allowing you to attach a telephoto or wide-angle lens to your camera. This can be a less expensive way to increase your zoom capabilities versus spending money on a whole new camera.

For example, the Canon PowerShot Pro Series S5 is (or depending on when you read this article, was) an eight megapixel digital camera with a 12x optical zoom. With a lens adapter, you can attach a teleconverter lens that increases the focal length by approximately 1.5x, changing the original maximum telephoto zoom of 432mm (35mm film equivalent) into one of approximately 648mm. Of course, in these zoom situations you almost certainly will need a tripod or other steadying device.

7. For Those Who dSLR, Switch the Lens

If you’re using a dSLR camera, you have a better option since you can switch out lenses altogether instead of investing in a new camera body. If you have a little more cash, you may even wish to spend money on a lens with a wider maximum aperture, allowing you to take faster photos in lowlight conditions without introducing noise. In some situations, you may actually take better photos than those shot with a higher-megapixel dSLR camera with a slower lens.

Newer digital cameras are always being produced, but our incomes may not always match our desires. Instead of fretting about the newest digital camera you cannot afford, think about how you can take advantage of the camera you already have. Learn more about photography basics, keep your digital camera clean, and steady it for more-impressive photos. Use free or low-cost image manipulation application, and consider purchasing high-quality image resampling software instead of plunking down money for a camera with more megapixels. A lens adapter may be all you need to support wider or narrower zooms with a prosumer camera, and for those with dSLRs, a replacement lens may allow you to take better photos than if you purchased a whole new digital camera body. With these free and low-cost ideas, you can get the most out of your current digital camera without spending money on the “latest and greatest”.

Whether you are a veteran quilter or a “newbie” just ready to begin your first quilt, like any great craftsman, having the right tools for the job and knowing how and when to use them is important to the success of your project.

In my family quilting has been passed on from generation to generation.  As a result, the new ideas and techniques, along with innovative tools and shortcuts have been passed on from one to another, so that the craft can continue to develop.  Always be proud of your work, sign and date all of the quilts that you make, so that you and those you give them to will enjoy them for many years to come.

There are basic necessities that are needed in quilting.  For example, you can use almost any type of fabric, as long as the different fabric of the quilt has approximately the same fiber and weight.  Cottons are used most often, but quilts made from flannels, polyester cotton, or even old blue jeans or men’s neck ties can give you creative materials for a quilt.   All fabrics should be prewashed by hand and in hot water.  If the fabric bleeds, use a combination of 1 ¼ cups of white vinegar and ½ cup salt to set the colors. Allow the fabric to soak in the washing machine for at least 4 hours or more.  The quilt should be labeled “dry-clean only.”

Choosing a color for your quilt is a personal preference.  Use a color wheel to pick colors that either compliment the room in which the quilt will be kept or if you are making a baby quilt, design the quilt to fit the new baby or keep soft pastels that would be perfect for any nursery décor.

How much fabric should you purchase depends on the pattern that is chosen.  Yardage amounts will be listed on each.  If you intend to enlarge the quilt, increase the size of the borders or add additional borders.  If the quilt is too large, reduce the size or numbers of borders.

Cotton batting is traditional, but polyester batting is much more common and easier to care for.  Depending on whether you plan to hand quilt or machine quilt, choose the batting right for you.

Since you want your quilt to stand the test of time, always select the best-quality thread.  Cotton thread is the best, but often time’s cotton-covered polyester thread is much more readily available and works just as well.   If you are sewing the pieces by machine or machine quilting, use needles # 14 or #16.   If you plan to hand quilt, a needle # 7 or # 8 is perfect.   Keep your sewing machine is good running condition, well-oiled, and the tread tension on the correct setting.  Change your needle after each project.  Have your machine serviced annually.  Unfortunately, there are many UFOs (Un Finished Projects) sitting out in sewing rooms due to improperly cared for equipment.

My Grandmother would be amazed with a rotary cutter and mat, since she only used card board templates to make her patchwork quilts.   I recommend you buy the smaller sized cutter, even though they come in large and small, because I find that it is easier to handle and requires less pressure when cutting.  Don’t forget to purchase the mat, if you are a “newbie” The larger mat is better, even though the initial investment is higher because it allows for more work/ cutting area.  Always remember to place the mat underneath your fabric before cutting or the work surface will be badly scored and the cutting blade will dull quickly.

Acrylic rulers are needed to measure and cut the fabric. These come in various sizes, shapes and are marked to support the cutting process.  An alternative to acrylic is Plexiglas.

For some patterns, drawing on your fabric is needed.  Washable pens and pencils are available.  A fine-line ballpoint pen is an option if you are marking the wrong side of the fabric and then cutting on that line.

Pressing as you sew is important, so keep your iron on hand.  It is easier to connect subsequent pieces when the seams on the first ones are pressed down.

The quilter’s best friend is your seam ripper.  No one is perfect, so this tool allow us to get rid of our mistakes quickly and cleanly.

From start to finish, from one generation to the next, quilting has evolved and changed.  Quilts have become more innovative and yet still resemble those of their “patchwork” past. One thing is still certain.  The correct tools of the quilter’s trade are needed to create these magnificent works of art.

Take time to quilt.

UFO: The Siberian Shepherd

At 7:17 AM on the Tuesday morning of June 30, 1908, a Siberian shepherd witnessed a climatic explosion that sent a wind so strong that it blew him and his flock into Mongolia. Xrytspet from Fanton in G10009845788899990766 told me this story. She said it is true.

The Siberian Shepherd

When the tribal people of the Kerulon River found the naked Siberian man with his sheep they called him Õ¿í which means man. He was hungry and very weak. They gave him horse blood to drink.

At first, Õ¿í thought it was soup made from beets but it didn’t taste like the borsht of his native country. He then realized it was blood. He drank it anyway to regain his strength.

When Õ¿í was strong enough to stand, the tribesmen decided that he needed a horse. They could make it a gift or they could trade a horse for five of his seventeen sheep. The discussion went on for several days. Taking five of the seventeen sheep would seriously handicap the man. A gift might be an insult to Õ¿í. Yet he had to have a horse in everyone’s opinion.

Not being able to make a decision, an old man of the tribe suggested that Õ¿í be given a young woman to marry. The young woman he had in mind was his granddaughter, ̺íãº, whom he had raised since her birth.

̺í㺠means “money.”

The young women had become ̺í㺠when she turned seventeen years old and was still not married. This was because her grandfather said that he would pay any amount of money to the man that married her. But no man in the tribe wanted to marry the girl because she had six fingers on each hand and six toes on both feet. She was not desirable to the men even though she was clean and of great beauty.

This is what the old man said, “If Õ¿í will marry my granddaughter, I will give him three horses. Ask him if he will do it, but don’t stand too close to him. He might kill you for suggesting it.”

The tribesman could not talk to Õ¿í but a young boy of the tribe named Ìîðü, which means horse, was able to communicate with Õ¿í.

The boy was an orphan who lived with his uncle. He didn’t like his uncle because he was too mean to him. When Õ¿í blew in with his sheep from Siberia, Ìîðü asked him if he could live with him to get away from his uncle. Õ¿í nodded that he could.

The boy was very happy and ran to his uncle to see if it was okay. His uncle seemed very happy and agreed it would be for the best for Ìîðü because the boy ran the horses too hard for their own good.

When Ìîðü was told to ask Õ¿í if he would marry ̺íãº, Ìîðü said to the elders of the tribe. “I will ask Õ¿í if he will marry ̺í㺠if you will loan me the fastest horse in the tribe. I want to be on that horse when I ask the question. I might have to run for my life.”

The elders agreed and Ìîðü mounted up and rode out to see Õ¿í.

Õ¿í had his tent pitched on the river bank and his sheep grazed outside. Õ¿í was very happy with his surroundings. He didn’t know exactly how he had got to this place, but he liked it.

Ìîðü reined his horse and said, “Õ¿í, will you take ̺í㺠to wife if you also receive a fine horse to boot.”

He was ready to spur the horse when Õ¿í said, “Is the horse sturdy and fast.”

Ìîðü assured him that the horse had good linage and that he would be very happy to have such a horse himself. Ìîðü said, “She is a mare and will bare a fine colt soon. You will have lots of horses and become a true tribesman.

Õ¿í said, “One horse is not enough. I won’t marry that six-toed freak for one horse.”

Ìîðü said, “Did I say one horse? I meant two horses.”

Õ¿í said, “You can leave now. I want three horses.”

Ìîðü said, “Did I say only two horse? I meant three horses.”

Õ¿í said, “Will I be able to stay here with your people and have good grass for my sheep?”

Ìîðü assured him that was so.

Õ¿í said, “Will I inherit all that her grandfather has?”

Ìîðü assured him that was true to. He said, “I told her grandfather that you would insist on that.”

Õ¿í said, “Will I be honored in the tribe like her grandfather is? I don’t want anyone laughing at me for marrying this freak you call a woman.”

Ìîðü said, “I’ve been assured that you will be held in high regard for your sacrifice and not be shamed in any way.”

Õ¿í said, “I have but one more request. Will you take care of my sheep and the horses for one year? I will be engaged in other activities.”

Ìîðü said, “I agree. Can I go tell the tribesman that you agree to take ̺í㺠to wife?”

Õ¿í said, “Ride on!”

When Ìîðü left, Õ¿í went into his tent and laid beside ̺í㺠who had been listening to all that was said.

She kissed Õ¿í and said, “Did you get all that you wanted?”

He said, “Getting you would have been more than enough.”
