It is highly unlikely that the only claim to fame of Ilkley West Yorks, is the song as mentioned above in the title of this short piece, as the area has been inhabited since the early Bronze Age. Swastika carvings and cup and ring markings have been found on rocky outcrops that date back to around 1800 BC, as well as the remains of dwellings.
Around AD 79, on a site which is now near the town centre, the Romans built a fort, and it ahs been suggested this was called Olianca. A few sections of the walls of this fort still exist, but most of it is covered by the Art Gallery and Museum as well as All Saints Church. Three crosses from the churchyard dating back to the 8th century have been removed and are kept inside the church to prevent more erosion.
This town was not terribly accessible during the 17th and 18th Century, but was renowned for having healing waters and eventually became well known as a fashionable spa town. Because of hydro movement, development came and a number of hospitals and convalescent homes were established. Some of the famous people to receive treatment here were Charles Darwin, while the Origin of the Species was being published and Madame Tussaud. The White Wells House is the only remaining hydro, a mere cottage, which overlooks the moors.
Another claim to fame is that Jimi Hendrix played at the Troutbeck Hotel in 1967, but pop fans ran amuck after the show was stopped by the police, and a good deal of damage was done. This hotel is now a nursing home!
This village and nearby Keighley are thought to be paranormal and UFO hotspots. The moor is dotted with many prehistoric rocks which are believed to be imbued with magical powers and the ability to transmit signals to aliens.
In 1987 a supposed alien abduction took place on Ilkely Moore, and this ads fuel to the fire of the legends. This village may well be of great interest to people who have faith in these type of happenings. The also “Barguest” stalks these Moores, he is a spectral hound who is friendly towards people, but unfortunately portends doom. I wonder if he was spotted before the Jimi Hendrix concert fiasco?
